KLD performs analyses of individual motor
vehicle crashes and of crash patterns. Our trained researchers and investigators perform
thorough field investigations of individual crashes to reconstruct events,
identify causative factors, and evaluate occupant
protection. Numerous statistical analysis techniques are used to identify and
evaluate safety issues.

KLD has also serviced the needs of the
National Automotive Sampling System
(NASS) since its inception in 1977. NASS is an important data collection arm of the
National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The data in NASS is used by the NHTSA policy makers and other traffic
safety experts, to analyze the number and severity of traffic related deaths and injuries,
and to develop effective countermeasures to improve automotive safety.
Major
automotive manufacturers incorporating safety improvements in
their products, and insurance companies evaluating methods to
reduce the detrimental effects of traffic crashes, are also
using NASS data. KLD is currently responsible for the operation of all NASS
research activities in the Western half of the United States. |
